There are a few reasons you might need a cistern repair or replacement. Cisterns should be replaced every 25-30 years. Any troubles or issues with your internal plumbing could be an indicator such as the toilet never stops running or trouble flushing. You’ll also want to watch for potential cracks or damage to the cistern tank.

It all comes down to the expected usage or demand on your water supply. Each household has different habits, plumbing fixtures, and ease of access to potable water. Ideally, your water supply should fall between 1 month of usage and having more than a week's supply of water.

Cisterns should be buried about 5 feet below the surface with a manway access point about a foot above the ground. Installing a cistern at the correct depth helps keep the water cool in the summer while protecting it against the freezing cold temperatures we see in Alberta.
